Understanding the role of social media in healthcare

Social media marketing for healthcare organizations can differ slightly from how other businesses connect with consumers. Either way, professionals across all industries recognize it as a powerful tool for finding new customers and engaging with current ones. How can you use social media to your advantage?

With the right strategy, you can:

• Reach a wider audience: Through organic content and paid ads, you can build your online presence. This is crucial if patient acquisition is one of your marketing goals.
• Better connect with patients: You can provide patients with useful information without them setting foot into your facility. Social channels allow you to engage with your target audience.
• Build trust and credibility: An active social media presence is a great way to highlight your expertise to the public. Sharing information from experienced physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals builds trust among your audience.
• Educate the public: Your social media accounts can serve as a hub for health education. Use the opportunity to share information about your services and some of the common conditions you treat.
• Promote wellness initiatives: Encourage users to take part in certain wellness initiatives through your social media posts.

Navigating HIPAA compliance on social media

One of the biggest things that separates healthcare social media marketing from other industries is HIPAA compliance. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act sets strict standards about patient confidentiality. If you violate any of these regulations, your practice could face hefty fines or other penalties.

All of your social media campaigns must be HIPAA-compliant. Don’t publish any protected health information, even if it’s through a direct message. This doesn’t mean that sharing patient stories is entirely off limits.

For example, let’s say you are a health clinic specializing in nutrition and weight loss coaching. To promote your services, you want to publish before and after photos of patients during their weight loss journey. You’ll need written consent from the patient to post their photos online.

Staff Education and Training Is Critical

Healthcare brands must be mindful of the implications of HIPAA non-compliance. The best way to mitigate this is through ongoing staff training. Make sure that everyone on your team understands industry regulations and how to comply with them.

Even adding a short disclaimer can prevent penalties. For instance, while sharing the above-mentioned before and after photos of a patient’s weight loss could help promote your services, you’ll want to include a “results may vary” clause in the fine print to help you avoid legal issues.

Suppose one of your staff members has built their own following as a healthcare influencer. In that case, remind them to add a disclaimer to their individual content that their opinions are their own and not a reflection of your organization.

Crafting engaging and educational content

You can build a robust healthcare social media marketing strategy with the right approach to content creation. Feel free to share infographics, videos, and written content that covers a wide range of topics, including:

• Industry news: Increase public health awareness by sharing relevant information about new medical treatments and emerging trends within the industry.
• Health tips: Social platforms can be an excellent resource for those seeking wellness tips. Produce content that users can easily absorb and highlight the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
• Behind-the-scenes content: Give your audience a closer look at how your facility operates. Take them behind the scenes for a day in the life of your staff members, so you’re well-informed.
• Educational content: Healthcare professionals can take advantage of social media to improve public health literacy and break down complex topics.
• Patient testimonials: Your social media accounts can highlight patient success stories to build trust and credibility. Just make sure you comply with HIPAA regulations when publishing this information.

Keep your target audience in mind when creating content. For example, a dental practice may only mention cardiovascular disease as it relates to oral health and dental care. A cardiology clinic, on the other hand, could explore this topic much more extensively.

You want to strike a balance with the informative content you share. Plan your posting schedule to give your feeds some variety. Remember that keeping a compassionate, professional tone is essential in all of your healthcare marketing strategies.

Leveraging social media platforms effectively

You have developed informative content and are now informed about HIPAA compliance in healthcare digital marketing. So, when it comes to sharing your posts on social media, how can you decide which sites to use?

Thankfully, healthcare social media marketing offers plenty of options. Make sure you diversify your strategy instead of relying on just one or two platforms. Assessing audience demographics can guide you in choosing the most appropriate content to share on various platforms.

For example, Facebook and Instagram could expose your content to users across many age groups, especially if you run paid campaigns to reach new patients. Meanwhile, if you rely on referrals from other providers, LinkedIn can be a great platform for professional networking.

HubSpot data shows how beneficial these sites can be to marketing teams. Facebook garners the highest return on investment for 28% of marketers, while 36% of Instagram users either like, comment, or share branded stories. LinkedIn aids lead generation for 89% of B2B marketers.

Optimizing your content for different online platforms requires some effort. However, when done correctly, you can maximize engagement and boost revenue. Use the following tips to succeed in today’s digital age:

• Rely on Facebook to spread the word about events and share an array of information.
• Choose LinkedIn for networking with others within the healthcare sector.
• Save your visual storytelling content for Instagram and TikTok.

Multiple platforms offer analytics tools to track your content’s performance. Data insight lets you know whether you need to adjust your strategy or if certain elements are working.

Engaging with patients and the community

A healthcare social media marketing strategy strongly influences overall patient engagement. How the audience interacts with your content on social platforms can impact what people think of your organization. If you’re not engaged with your online audience, potential patients could opt for another provider with an active social media presence.

Focus on user-generated content like polls and Q&A sessions. These are simple ways to engage with your audience and understand their needs and concerns. You may even consider hosting live videos to foster interaction from viewers.

Even posts like infographics or photos can warrant comments and questions from users. Patients value transparent communication, so don’t ignore any requests. Provide a timely, thoughtful response to inquiries to avoid souring a user’s perception of your brand.

While social media can be an extension of your marketing strategy, its main purpose is to establish a sense of community. By sharing patient stories and connecting on certain pain points, you can build a strong community among users.

Managing crisis communication on social media

Various crises can occur while working in the healthcare industry. You can leverage social media to manage a crisis that could impact your brand’s image. This is one of the best ways to communicate with the masses and provide the answers that concerned parties are seeking.

Say a security breach impacts your clinic, jeopardizing patient privacy and putting sensitive data in the wrong hands. Current and prospective patients alike will have their concerns about the trustworthiness of your healthcare organization. Detail your relief efforts through social channels to let the audience know you share their concerns and are working diligently to enhance cybersecurity.

This is just one scenario that could affect your business’s success. Experts recommend making contingency plans for potential issues that may arise and cause panic. When a crisis occurs, you can address it immediately with clarity and an empathetic tone.

Bear in mind that users could be the first ones to bring an issue to your attention. Regularly monitor your accounts and stay engaged with new inquiries. Prompt responses ensure that you and your audience are always in the loop.

Measuring success and ROI

There’s no denying that proper healthcare social media marketing can have a lasting impact on your brand. But how can you tell if your strategy is driving success? Monitoring social media performance and practice growth is essential.

Keep tabs on the following metrics:

• Online engagement rates: You may find that select posts perform better than others, such as Q&A sessions or content that employs a certain hashtag.
• Website traffic: As you ramp up your social media usage, your practice’s website may have more users over time. Monitor both organic traffic and those who come from social media ads.
• Patient inquiries: Call volume or chatbot messaging may increase as more users learn about your services. Monitoring the numbers and tying them to your social media activity can show you what’s working.
• Click-through rate: If you run paid ads on social channels, your click-through rate is a key performance indicator. Underperforming numbers could mean you’re not targeting the right audience or your content needs adjustment.
• Return on investment: Pay attention to how much you’re spending on your marketing efforts and the type of return they bring.

You can use individual social media sites as well as Google Analytics to measure your strategy’s success. Take your efforts a step further with Weave’s analytics tool. This cutting-edge feature reviews significant amounts of data relevant to your practice, including call volume, appointment requests, and more.

Remember that data can change over time. Don’t be discouraged if your engagement drops for a brief period but then picks back up. Look at long-term trends to see whether your strategy needs revising or if you’re on the right track.
