Dental Instrument Recycling: Why It Matters and How Your Practice Can Participate

Is your dental practice currently utilizing dental instrument recycling programs? If you aren’t, your office might be contributing to an unnecessary amount of plastic and metal waste. While sterilization is a primary focus for most offices, you must eventually recycle dental instruments that have reached the end of their useful life. Establishing a formal recycling process for dental instruments ensures your practice remains both eco-friendly and efficient.

Understanding Dental Instrument Recycling

Dental instrument recycling involves reusing, repurposing, or disposing of hand instruments used by dentists from dental practices. Dental offices can recycle plastic items, such as saliva ejectors, as well as metal instruments.

Your office can use several recycling methods, including:

• Sterilizing instruments and reusing them
• Repurposing instruments by donating them
• Disposing of old instruments and replacing them with new ones

Your practice probably uses its fair share of recyclable materials. A dental office recycling program allows your practice to do its part to protect the environment.

Benefits of Dental Instrument Recycling

If your practice isn’t recycling dental instruments along with the many single-use items you utilize daily, like plastic cups, you’re missing out on many benefits.

Less Environmental Impact

Dental offices have a huge impact on the environment. Studies have shown that the dental industry is responsible for adding more than five tons of mercury to the country’s wastewater each year.

Many dentists have moved away from using dental fillings containing mercury and other harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, not all dental clinics are as eco-friendly as others.

By taking recycling more seriously, your practice can limit its environmental impact. You might even want to go as far as to search for single-use alternatives to plastic products.

Cost Savings and Improved Efficiency

Dental instrument recycling may improve your dentistry office’s bottom line. You can minimize waste disposal costs by shopping for greener options than single-use items.

You can also keep your dental practice’s costs down by getting as much life as you can out of instruments. Create a system for sanitizing these instruments after each use. This can work wonders for the environment and make your day-to-day operations more efficient.

Better Practice Reputation

According to a 2023 survey, nearly 80% of Americans want to give their business to sustainable companies. Your practice can take advantage of this by implementing a recycling strategy and ensuring dental patients know about it. Going green could greatly improve your practice’s reputation.

How To Implement a Dental Instrument Recycling Program

Creating a dental instrument recycling program isn’t as difficult as you might suspect. Simply follow these steps.

Assess Current Waste and Identify Recyclables

Keep a close eye on the waste your dental office generates. Consider which dental instruments and plastic products could be recycled.

An initial waste audit will uncover the types of waste your practice throws out and the amount of waste it creates.

Partner With a Recycling Program or Vendor

Several companies specialize in helping dental offices recycle waste. Options include Premier Dental and its Premier Instrument Recycling Program and Hu-Friedy and its Environdent Recycling Program.

Train Staff and Integrate Recycling Into Daily Operations

Everyone in your dental office should know about your recycling push. Train your staff so they understand how to handle recyclable materials and dental equipment.

Best Practices for Sustainable Dental Office Recycling Programs

Establishing an effective dental instrument recycling process is a start. But why stop there?

Here are other steps you can take to ensure your dental practice makes the most of this program.

Regular Monitoring and Updates

Monitor the effectiveness of your dental practice’s recycling program and make changes as necessary. By identifying areas for improvement, you can achieve even better outcomes.

Expand Beyond Instruments

Dental instruments, single-use plastics, and products like toothpaste tubes and floss containers aren’t the only items your dental practice can recycle. Think about how you’re approaching trash disposal when it comes to packaging, paper products, and other office supplies, too. You can even recycle used dental equipment like X-ray machines.
