What To Expect From a Veterinarian’s Work Schedule in Today’s Clinics

Working in veterinary medicine is extremely rewarding, but professionals can experience burnout due to long hours and a poor work-life balance. Get a closer look at the typical veterinarian work schedule and how to improve time management using advanced scheduling measures.

What is the typical work schedule for a veterinarian?

After completing veterinary school, professionals typically work a full-time schedule, with most treating animals for 40+ hours every week.

Your exact schedule depends on the type of facility you work at. The average clinic is open weekdays between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. However, vets could work additional hours if their facility offers emergency care and always has providers on call.

What is a typical day as a vet?

Many veterinarians have a routine schedule each day that includes:

• Reviewing patient cases, performing exams, and running diagnostics in the morning.
• Conducting surgical procedures and managing urgent appointments by mid-day.
• Following up with pet owners and maintaining medical equipment and records during the afternoon.

If there’s an emergency, professionals may face extended work hours to provide prompt animal care.

Part-time options and time off in veterinary practice

While the average veterinarian’s work schedule is demanding, there are ways to achieve a proper work-life balance and boost job satisfaction. Part-time roles may be available in veterinary clinics with multiple practitioners.

Full-time vets usually work five days a week, though a condensed schedule may be possible. Relief vets, for instance, could work a 12-hour shift three days a week. If you opt for this type of position, you may work longer shifts than most but have more days off during the week.

Practices can also rotate schedules, especially if they offer 24-hour emergency care.

Balancing workload

It doesn’t matter if you work overnight in an emergency clinic treating injured animals or at a small practice offering well-visits. Most vets have trouble juggling their demanding careers and their personal lives.

How can you configure your veterinary work environment to avoid chronic stress and compassion fatigue? Set aside enough personal time to unwind and consider rotating your schedule to accommodate your needs.

Make the most of your time spent in the clinic with veterinary software. New technology reduces the time spent on administrative tasks so you can focus on your patients.

Proactive scheduling for veterinary teams

There’s no doubt that the typical veterinarian’s work schedule can be daunting. Make your practice much more efficient with scheduling solutions that keep the staff, the patients, and their owners happy.

Are there several vets on staff? Consider implementing a rotating schedule among them. This enables you to offer weekend and emergency coverage without issue.

You may find that your animal hospital is in high demand at certain times of the day. Bringing in relief veterinarians is a great way to treat all of your patients without risking provider burnout.

Some pet owners fail to show up for their appointment. Help reduce no-shows and last-minute cancellations with automated appointment reminders. If a scheduling issue occurs that the staff needs to be aware of, team chat features promote swift internal communications.
