How to Become a Qualified Endoscopy Technician

Endoscopic procedures are essential diagnostic tools, and the role of an endoscopy technician is vital to a successful healthcare team. If you are pursuing a healthcare career that offers stability and growth, becoming an endoscopy technician is an excellent choice. By enrolling in specialized endoscopy technician programs, students gain the clinical expertise needed to excel in the field. Furthermore, obtaining an endoscopy technician certification can significantly enhance your professional credentials and long-term earning potential.

Endoscopy technicians don’t need to meet specific education or certification requirements. But completing endoscopy technician programs gives students specialized skills and experience that prepare them for this role and help them stand out in applications.

Understanding Programs for Endoscopy Technicians

Endoscopy technicians assist with endoscopies, which are procedures that examine the digestive system using a camera attached to a scope. Endoscopies can include colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, and laparoscopies, all of which require patients to undergo moderate sedation.

An endoscopy technician program consists of an educational or certification curriculum that trains students to assist surgeons and other professionals with endoscopies. Through these programs, students learn the skills necessary to be responsible for all of the following tasks:

• Assisting physicians and nurses during endoscopy procedures
• Preparing the operating room for the procedure
• Maintaining and managing endoscopic equipment to ensure that all equipment is functioning properly before the procedure
• Performing safety checks to ensure patient safety during procedures

These programs give students both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience they need to jump right into an endoscopy technician role.

Program Structure and Duration

Numerous endoscopy tech programs are available through institutions across the U.S. Generally, these programs take about a year to complete, although associate degrees typically take two years. They consist of classes and clinical experiences, providing training and practical understanding.

You can find hybrid, online, and on-campus programs to suit your schedule. But keep in mind that an entirely online program won’t give you the practical training you need to feel confident stepping into a technician role.

If you’re considering an educational program from an accredited school, you may qualify for financial aid or student loans to help you cover the fees involved. These programs typically cost between $200 and $300 per credit hour and require between 24 and 40 credit hours total.

Key Components of Endoscopy Technician Training

During endoscopy technician courses, students learn about topics and responsibilities like:

• Patient care administration
• Exam room setup
• Gastrointestinal bleeds
• Emergency procedures
• Sterile field procedures
• Medical terminology

While every program has different clinical requirements, you can expect to complete at least 300 clinical hours to obtain your certificate or complete your technician program. Clinical hours may take place in hospitals or private clinics.

Endoscopy Technician Certification and Licensure

Aside from completing an educational program, seeking an endoscopy technician certificate in an endoscopy-related field can help you gain additional skills and stand out among job applicants.

For example, you can become a Certified Endoscope Reprocessor through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association. This program teaches you to sterilize endoscope equipment per industry regulations.

Many technician jobs require a Certification in Basic Life Support from the American Red Cross, which teaches you to perform chest compressions and other basic life support techniques. Typically, anyone who works in a hospital must complete this education.

There are currently no state licensing requirements for endoscopy technicians.

Career Opportunities and Outlook

As an endoscopy tech, you’ll have the opportunity to work in hospitals, outpatient centers, private practices, and other facilities that perform endoscopies.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of surgical technicians is expected to grow by 5% between 2022 and 2032 — faster than the average for all jobs.

Endoscopy technicians make an average of $21 per hour across the U.S., but averages also vary by state. Seeking additional education or certifications could increase your earning potential.

Advancing Your Career in Endoscopy

Many endoscopy techs eventually progress to medical assistant roles or seek additional education to become nurses or surgical technologists. Some clinics pay for at least one semester of your schooling, especially when you sign a contract stating that you will continue working for them after you complete school.

Even if you would rather continue working as a tech for the duration of your employment, you can consider taking classes to specialize in a certain department, such as flexible endoscopies or colonoscopies.
