Surgical Technician Job Description Template

Surgical technologists and technicians play a vital role in operating settings. From prepping and transporting patients to sterilizing medical instruments and positioning them carefully near the operating table based on the surgeon’s preferences, operating room technicians and surgical technologists are crucial to patient outcomes and surgical procedure efficiency.

Demand for surgical assistants continues to grow faster than average job positions as healthcare workers exit the workforce. Understanding the comprehensive surgical tech responsibilities is key, as these professionals prepare operating rooms more efficiently, assist during surgery, provide support during emergencies, and contribute to positive patient outcomes.

If you’re interested in hiring a surgical technologist or technician, use our guide below as a template for your hiring efforts and for developing a detailed surgical tech job description.

Understanding the Role of a Surgical Technician

A surgical technician plays a crucial role in the operating room, assisting surgeons and nurses by preparing the operating environment, sterilizing equipment, and handling instruments during surgical procedures. Techs aid in preparing operating rooms, maintain a sterile field, and support the surgical team to facilitate efficient and safe surgeries, contributing significantly to patient care and surgical outcomes.

Surgical technologists share many of the same responsibilities as technicians but must undergo additional training. With this added training, surgical technologists gain the top technical skills to operate diagnostic equipment, apply dressings, and more. Most surgical technologists work in doctors’ offices, hospitals, and outpatient care centers.

All surgical tech members play a vital role in every surgical procedure as they create a sterile environment, ensure that everything is working properly for surgeons, prepare patients, and move patients to their recovery area, where other members of their family may have questions.

Key Responsibilities of a Surgical Technician or Technologist

You must list specific key duties when creating your surgical technologist’s job description. Required Skills and Qualifications To Aid in Surgical Procedures

A surgery technician must go through educational training and should have on-the-job experience. For additional job growth, a surgical technologist may also take a certification exam to become a Certified Surgical Technologist.

To maintain this certification, surgery techs must fulfill continuing education requirements, which can keep them up to date on the latest trends in surgical technology.

Surgical technologists or technicians should have the following qualities for safe surgical assisting:

• An understanding of medical terminology
